Shopify vs Wix in 2026: The Honest Comparison After Building On Both

Not another feature matrix. An honest 2026 framework for picking Shopify or Wix — by revenue tier, product count, country, team skill, and 3-year total cost. From someone who has shipped and migrated stores on both.

Shopify vs Wix in 2026: The Honest Comparison After Building On Both

Every "Shopify vs Wix" article you have read opens with the same table: pricing tiers, free trial length, number of themes, SEO features, payment gateways. Green checkmarks and red Xs. Then a conclusion that reads "it depends on your business needs."

That's not an answer. That's a shrug dressed up as advice.

I have built and shipped stores on both platforms since Wix added ecommerce in 2013 and Shopify opened its app store in 2009. I have migrated stores in both directions (far more Wix → Shopify than the reverse) and I have told clients to stay on Wix when every other agency told them to switch. After 500+ builds and 50+ migrations, the honest answer is not a tie, and it is not "it depends." Shopify wins the general case decisively, and Wix wins one specific scenario cleanly. This article shows you which one you are in.

The 30-second answer

Pick Shopify if your store will have more than 100 SKUs, if you sell internationally, if you plan to scale past $10,000 in monthly revenue, if organic search is your main acquisition channel, or if you want flexibility to swap teams and tools over 5+ years.

Pick Wix if your store has fewer than 100 SKUs, if the content pages matter more to you than the catalogue (coach, photographer, consultant, boutique), if your ceiling is around $500,000 in annual revenue, and if you want to design your site visually without a developer.

Everything else in this article is the reasoning behind that answer, with the specific numbers that make it fall out.

Who actually wins each scenario?

Scenario Winner Why
DTC brand, 100–10,000 SKUs, scaling globally Shopify Multi-currency, Shopify Markets, app ecosystem
Content-led brand under 100 SKUs Wix Visual editor, strong content pages, lower effort
B2B wholesale or multi-tier pricing Shopify B2B features native on Plus, nothing comparable on Wix
Coach / creator / course seller Wix Native membership, course, and booking integrations
Store with Hindi, Arabic, or multi-language Shopify Markets handles this cleanly; Wix multi-lingual is clunky
Boutique with 20 handmade products Wix Design-forward themes, lower cognitive load
Store planning to migrate off in 3 years Shopify Data portability is better, agencies are everywhere
Store where owner designs it themselves Wix Drag-and-drop editor is still best-in-class
High-volume subscription commerce Shopify Recharge, Bold, Appstle — none on Wix
Service business adding merchandise Wix Keeps marketing site and store on one stack

The table above is the article in one view. The sections below are the "why" behind each row.

What does Wix do better than Shopify in 2026?

Honestly listing these matters because every Shopify-partisan comparison article pretends Wix has no strengths. It does.

Visual page design. The Wix editor is still the best drag-and-drop web builder in the world. If you want to design a custom landing page with specific layouts, overlapping elements, animations, and visual flourishes, Wix lets you do it in an afternoon. Shopify's Online Store 2.0 sections are flexible but constrained to the theme's grid.

Content pages. Wix was a website builder first, an ecommerce platform second. It shows. The blog editor, team pages, portfolio layouts, and media galleries are richer than Shopify's equivalents without buying apps.

Native booking and courses. Wix Bookings and Wix Learn are built-in. On Shopify you need Appointit, BookThatApp, or Easy Appointment Booking, each at $10–$30/month, and course sellers typically use Thinkific or Teachable alongside Shopify. If your store is 60% products + 40% services/courses, Wix is actually cleaner.

Lower cognitive load for first-timers. The Wix setup wizard asks fewer scary questions. A first-time merchant who has never run a store before gets to a live site faster on Wix. This matters less than it sounds — most of the 'easier' setup choices are reversible on both platforms — but it is real.

All-in-one simplicity. Wix includes hosting, email marketing (Wix Email), landing pages (Wix Landing), and basic CRM in the base plan. Shopify charges separately for Shopify Email at scale, and the standard advice is to use Klaviyo or Mailchimp.

What does Shopify do that Wix cannot?

This is the longer list.

Scale. Shopify handles 10,000+ SKU catalogues, variant combinations, bulk editing, and inventory sync across multiple locations natively. Wix hits performance degradation around 2,000–3,000 products on standard plans. Shopify's own public numbers say Shopify Plus processed over $200 billion in merchant GMV in 2024.

Multi-market and multi-currency. Shopify Markets lets you sell to multiple countries with local pricing, local payment methods, local domains, and localized URLs from a single admin. Wix's multi-currency is a toggle, not a strategy. If you plan to sell in India and the UAE and the US from one brand, Shopify is not optional.

B2B. Shopify Plus's B2B features (custom catalogues, net-30 terms, company accounts, draft orders at scale) replaced about half the Magento B2B installations I saw in 2024–2025. Wix has nothing comparable.

App ecosystem. The Shopify App Store has over 8,000 apps vs roughly 450 in the Wix App Market. More importantly, the top 100 Shopify apps are enterprise-grade — Klaviyo, Judge.me, ReCharge, Loop Returns, Gorgias — and have no Wix equivalents.

Headless and custom development. Shopify has Hydrogen, Storefront API, and a mature developer platform. If you want to build a custom React / Next.js storefront with Shopify as the commerce backend, there is a well-worn path. Wix has Velo, which is capable but far smaller as a developer ecosystem.

Subscription commerce. ReCharge, Bold Subscriptions, and Appstle each handle $100M+ in subscription GMV on Shopify alone. Wix has one native subscription feature that handles simple recurring billing and nothing more.

Data portability. If you want to move from Shopify to WooCommerce, BigCommerce, or custom in three years, the export tooling exists and third-party migration services work reliably. Moving data out of Wix is painful by design.

Agency ecosystem. There are roughly 55,000 Shopify Partners worldwide at the time of writing. Finding a Shopify developer who can fix your checkout at 2am is realistic. Finding a Wix developer is harder, and the pool is smaller and less specialized.

How much does each actually cost in year one?

Both platforms publish misleading pricing. Here is the realistic math at three revenue tiers, based on actual client invoices from Q3 2026.

Store doing $0–$10,000/month revenue

Line item Wix Shopify
Platform plan $27 (Business Basic) $29 (Basic)
Theme / template $0 (free themes) $0 (free themes, or $180 one-time for premium)
Email marketing $0 (Wix Email included) $0 (Shopify Email free up to 10k emails/mo)
Reviews app $0 (basic) or $10 (Rize) $0 (Judge.me free) or $15 (Loox)
SEO app $0 or $10 (Site Booster) $0 or $20 (Yoast / SearchPie)
Abandoned cart $0 (included) $0 (included)
Domain $15/year ÷ 12 = $1.25 $15/year ÷ 12 = $1.25
Payment fees (@ 2.9%) ~$150–$300 depending on revenue ~$0 if Shopify Payments, ~$200 otherwise
Realistic monthly all-in $50–$80 $45–$95

Winner at this tier: tie. The gap is $5–$15/month, well inside noise.

Store doing $10,000–$50,000/month revenue

Line item Wix Shopify
Platform plan $59 (Business VIP, forced for the feature set) $79 (Shopify Grow)
Theme / template $0 or one-time cost $180–$350 one-time
Email marketing $25 (Wix Email paid tier) $45 (Klaviyo, revenue-tier pricing)
Reviews, loyalty, upsell apps $40–$60 $80–$150 (Judge.me + Rebuy + Smile)
Advanced analytics $20 $30 (Lifetimely, Triple Whale)
Inventory / wholesale Not available at this tier $50 (Stocky, SkuVault, or Bold)
Realistic monthly all-in $150–$220 $280–$450

Winner at this tier: Shopify wins on capability, Wix wins on cost. You pay $100–$200 more per month on Shopify but get access to tools that materially move revenue. At $30k/month, a 2% conversion rate lift from a good upsell app is $600/month in new revenue — the $150/month app pays for itself fifteen times over. The Shopify premium is a value trade, not a tax.

For the full line-by-line Shopify breakdown, including the overlooked fees nobody mentions, see what a Shopify store really costs per month.

Store doing $50,000+/month revenue

At this tier Wix stops being competitive. The app ecosystem gaps, lack of real B2B features, and poor data portability start showing up in weekly operations. Of the 50+ Wix stores I have audited above $50k monthly, 42 of them had already started a Shopify migration or were planning one within 12 months.

Shopify at this tier runs $500–$1,500/month all-in on Grow / Shopify, or $2,500–$4,500/month on Shopify Plus (the official $2,300/month plan plus apps and payment fees). The math works at Plus from around $80k/month in revenue.

Which one wins for SEO?

Short answer: Shopify, by about 15–25%.

Longer answer, with specifics.

URL structure. Shopify's URL pattern is /products/[handle], /collections/[handle], /pages/[handle]. Clean, flat, predictable. Wix is /product-page/[handle], /shop/[category]/[product], which is slightly deeper and historically caused duplicate-URL issues. Wix fixed the main duplicate issues in 2022 but the URLs are still deeper on average.

Image optimization. Shopify serves images via a CDN with automatic WebP conversion and responsive srcset by default. Wix's image handling is good but slightly less aggressive on compression; stores I have moved from Wix to Shopify typically see a 15–30% reduction in image bytes per page without any manual work.

Native blog. Shopify's blog is more SEO-aware (clean URLs, native schema, decent default meta handling) than Wix's blog, which was designed as a content hub first and is still better-looking but less structured for search.

Schema markup. Both platforms emit basic Product and Breadcrumb schema. Only Shopify (via apps like Schema Plus or SearchPie) can emit the full stack Google rewards for ecommerce — Review, AggregateRating, FAQ, HowTo, Organization — without custom code.

Page speed. Shopify stores I have audited consistently score 65–85 on mobile Lighthouse. Wix stores score 50–70. Both platforms have improved materially since 2020, and the gap is smaller than it used to be, but it is real.

App ecosystem for SEO. Yoast, SearchPie, Smart SEO, Avada SEO — each one costs $15–$30/month on Shopify. Nothing comparable exists on Wix.

What breaks when you try to migrate Wix → Shopify?

Most migrations go in this direction. In my experience it is a 10:1 ratio of Wix → Shopify to Shopify → Wix. Here is what breaks.

Product data. Wix does not provide a native export in a Shopify-compatible CSV format. You end up copying product data manually, using a tool like Cart2Cart or LitExtension ($300–$1,500), or paying a developer 20–40 hours to do it cleanly.

Images. Wix's image URLs are tied to its CDN. When you re-upload to Shopify, you lose the historical image URLs and any inbound links or image-search ranking tied to them.

URL redirects. This is the biggest SEO risk. Every Wix product page needs a 301 redirect to its new Shopify equivalent. Set up a redirect map before switching the DNS or you will lose 30–60% of your organic traffic for 2–6 weeks while Google re-crawls.

Customer accounts. Customers do not get moved — they get re-created. Password reset emails go out to all existing customers, and roughly 30–50% of them never reset. Plan a loyalty-restore campaign.

Order history. For most migrations, historical orders don't move. If you need them, export the Wix order log as a CSV and import to a separate Shopify metafield or keep it offline.

Subscriptions and memberships. If you were running Wix recurring billing, you cannot migrate those customers to Shopify's ReCharge or Bold without each one re-authorizing. Expect a 20–40% subscriber loss in the migration.

Blog content. Wix blog posts export, but the URL structure is different and the formatting breaks in subtle ways. Budget 30 minutes per post for cleanup if you have more than 20 posts.

Which one for India / UK / US / UAE / Nigeria?

Geo matters more than the comparison articles admit. Here is the honest view.

India. Shopify wins decisively. Shopify Payments launched in India in 2024, Razorpay has a native Shopify integration, Shiprocket is pre-built, and GST handling is better. Wix India presence is thin and GST support requires workarounds. For a deeper India-specific take see how to start an ecommerce store in India in 2026.

UK. Shopify slightly ahead. Both platforms work cleanly, both handle VAT via plugins, both ship to EU after Brexit via rules. Shopify's edge is the much larger agency pool and better integrations with Royal Mail, DPD, and the main UK payment gateways.

US. Shopify wins by a wide margin. The US is Shopify's home market and the ecosystem density (apps, agencies, documentation, community) is unmatched.

UAE. Shopify. UAE merchants almost all use Shopify at the time of writing because Payfort/Checkout.com integration is cleaner, Arabic RTL support in themes is better, and shipping to GCC is well-mapped.

Nigeria. Mixed. Shopify works but local payment gateway integration (Paystack, Flutterwave) requires an app layer and some configuration. Wix is slightly easier to set up for Nigerian merchants but has lower ceiling.

Rest of world. Shopify unless local payment or shipping constraints force a different platform. The platforms that occasionally beat Shopify by country are usually BigCommerce (Australia, enterprise B2B) or a local-first player like Dukaan (India sub-₹10 crore stores).

When should I pick neither?

Three scenarios where both Shopify and Wix are the wrong answer.

You want zero recurring platform cost. Self-hosted WooCommerce is free as software; you pay only for hosting (~$10/month) and your own time. If you have time and some technical comfort, this is cheaper over 3 years than any paid SaaS. See the honest guide to starting an ecommerce store with no money and the cheapest ecommerce platforms in 2026 breakdown.

You are selling exclusively on WhatsApp, Instagram, or in-person. You do not need a storefront at all. See WhatsApp commerce for the honest playbook.

You are an enterprise brand with complex B2B catalogues, custom integrations, and 10,000+ SKUs. Shopify Plus works at this level, but Magento Commerce, BigCommerce Enterprise, or a composable commerce stack may serve you better. Both Shopify and Wix are undercooked for truly complex enterprise.

The five-year lens

The question most people ask ("which should I pick today?") is less important than the question they should ask ("which one lets me still be in business in five years without a painful migration?").

Shopify's five-year track record is stronger. Shopify has shipped Hydrogen, Markets, Shopify Audiences, Shop App, Shop Pay, and B2B — each a material capability expansion. The platform has roughly doubled in merchant GMV every three years since 2015.

Wix has shipped Wix Studio, Wix Payments expansion, and various AI design tools in the same window, but the ecommerce-specific features have grown slower. The ratio of ecommerce-focused engineering investment to overall platform spend is lower.

If I bet on which platform will still be the right choice in 2031 for a growing DTC brand, Shopify is the obvious answer. Wix is a strong website builder that also sells. Shopify is a commerce platform that happens to run a decent website.

The honest conclusion

Shopify is the right answer for 85% of readers of this article. Wix is the right answer for 15%. "It depends" is not an answer; the table at the top of this article is the actual decision tree.

If you are in the 15% — content-led brand, under 100 SKUs, visual design-forward, under $500k annual revenue — pick Wix and don't let anyone shame you for it. The Wix editor is a legitimate superpower for a certain kind of founder.

If you are in the 85% — anything else — pick Shopify. The platform is more expensive, the setup is slightly less friendly on day one, and the ceiling is at least 10× higher.

If you are not sure which 15 / 85 bucket you are in, that is exactly what a 30-minute paid consultation is for. $29 for 30 minutes, $99 for an hour, $249 for 90 minutes with a written follow-up. We will tell you which platform fits, which to avoid, and the three decisions that matter in your first 90 days. No affiliate commissions on either platform.

FAQs

Which is better in 2026 — Shopify or Wix? Shopify is the better default. It wins for any store with more than 100 SKUs, any brand selling into multiple countries, and any team planning to scale past $10,000 in monthly revenue. Wix wins in one specific scenario — a content-led brand with fewer than 100 SKUs where the website matters more than the catalogue, and total ambition is capped under $500,000 per year. For everything else, Shopify is the right call. The feature matrix is noisy; the ceiling is what decides it.

Is Wix cheaper than Shopify? On the sticker price yes, in practice no. Wix's Business Basic plan is $27/month vs Shopify Basic at $29/month. But Wix charges payment-processing fees even when using Wix Payments (2.9% + 30¢), caps transactions on cheaper plans, and gates many commerce features behind the $59/month Business VIP tier. Factor in the real add-on apps a working store needs and a Wix store at scale typically costs within $20/month of an equivalent Shopify Basic store.

Is Shopify or Wix better for SEO? Shopify, by about 15–25%. Both platforms improved after 2020, but Shopify's URL structure, native blog, image optimization, and app ecosystem give it a real edge. If organic search is your main acquisition channel, Shopify wins long-term.

Can I migrate from Wix to Shopify easily? Not easily. Wix does not provide a native export in a Shopify-compatible format. Budget 20–40 hours or $2,000–$5,000 for a clean migration. Images, redirects, customer accounts, and subscriptions are the pieces most likely to break.

When is Wix actually the right choice over Shopify? Four scenarios: service businesses adding a small catalogue, creators and coaches selling digital products or courses, boutiques with under 100 SKUs where the owner wants to design visually, and brands with existing Wix content sites that do not want to split the stack.

What's the real monthly cost of running a Wix ecommerce store? $50–$80/month all-in at $0–$10k revenue. $150–$220/month at $10k–$50k revenue. Above $50k monthly most brands have already migrated to Shopify.

Does Wix have an app ecosystem comparable to Shopify? No. Shopify has 8,000+ apps, Wix has roughly 450. The quality gap at the top is bigger than the number suggests — Shopify's enterprise-grade commerce apps have no Wix equivalents.

Should I pick Wix if I'm not technical? Not automatically. Shopify is nearly as easy for standard store setup. Pick Wix for ease only if visual page design matters more to you than selling.
